Casting for Cats Tournament

Casting for Cats announces cancellation of Ladies Backcountry Tournament, October 20-21, 2017

Life is slowly returning to the Florida Keys, however many homes and businesses
were badly damaged or destroyed due Hurricane Irma. Many events of course
were cancelled or rescheduled, which is no surprise due to the Keys vital
infrastructure slowly being restored.

With that in mind, after 16 successful years Casting for Cats, President and
Tournament director, Sharon Mahoney Ellenwood, has announced that the 17th
Annual Casting for Cats Ladies Backcountry tournament on October 20 & 21, 2017
has been cancelled.  “I feel it is in bad taste to have this tournament when people
are homeless and businesses are closed. I cannot in good conscious ask the
community for donations for our silent auction and expect people to support this
event, when many people are out of work. I care so much about the people in this
community! So many of our all-volunteer staff, whom we depend so much on are
working at cleaning up and trying to rebuild their lives and homes.”

Casting for Cats a 501(c)(3) charity raises money through tournaments and events
to spay and neuter and care for the large feral cat population in the Upper Keys as
well as helping other needy animals. Sharon went on to say, “We will continue
helping displaced and injured animals, and can help with animal food for those
having a hard time. And a huge THANK YOU to Big Dog Ranch Rescue for the large
animal food donation to help feed our many animals!”

The Casting for Cats tournament will return in 2018, on October 19th & 20th. So
please save the date. In addition Casting for Cats is proud to announce that they
own the Florida Bay Music Festival scheduled for November 3, 2018 at Founders
Park in Islamorada. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Casting for Cats Ladies Backcountry Fishing Tournament started in 2001, a ladies, one-day backcountry fishing tournament to raise money to help feral cats here in the Upper Keys. What started out as a fun day of fishing has now become out major fund raiser to help so many needy animals. We are a 501(c)(3) charity recognized by the State of Florida. The tournament is held the third weekend in October every year.  Hells Bay Boatworks has been making their signature backcountry skiffs (18′ Waterman) available to be awarded to the first angler who is catches all six backcountry species during the tournament. No one has won the boat to date.  Dragonfly Boatworks continues to generously give away a 10′ Custom Stand Up Paddleboard to the tournament as well.
